Editing Class Begins!

So I have recently started a small non-credit editing class over at Simon Fraser University online. It is a very interesting class, and I have to say that so far I am liking the new Canvas system compared to the old Blackboard software. From what I have gathered so far from the class readings the editing world is far more varied than my original research once dictated. This could different in addition because the class is from SFU which is up in Vancover, British Columbia.

I have gathered so far these forms of editing:

  • Structural Editing – What I learned was called “Development Editing” the Structure Editor focuses on working to fix logical issues with the manuscript, cleaning up problems, and bringing out the authors voice.
  • Copy Editing – A line by line check for grammar, structure, and consistency of the manuscript.
  • Stylistic Editing – Stylistic editing to clarify meaning, to remove jargon, and to make it easier for the reader to understand the manuscript.
  • Proofreading – A final check applied after typesetting, and formatting the documentation for issues of grammar, punctuation, or major lapses in logic.

My experience with the class has been eye opening, and it has helped me slowly gain a greater idea of the staff I will need to form in the future.

Das Wyrd

A basic name for a basic country. Part of my push for my own writing has led to a greater dream of founding an independent press or publishing house. I have wanted to run my own “studio” for a while to help produce quality independent works. I will speak more about this ideal inthe future but for now I would like to focus mor eon my hopes with the publishing school, and this editing class in particular. First, I would to hone my edge so that I can eventually start working as an editor in some way to gain experience in the industry. With what I make I hope to publish my own works and develop a team to build the Das Wyrd name.

The class so far has focus most on the definition, and what an editor does. We have been expanding further into what form of editing we would like. This week (module 2) focused primarily on the occupation and role of Structural Editor. A role that I have come to slowly feel greater connection to. My experience as a Storyteller, Game Master, and much more to me has built up a basis for me becoming a Structural or “Development” editor.
